Even in the most technical environments we can stumble across several confusions between the dimension and the resolution of the digital photography images. If someone tells you they want a picture printed that is of 300 dpi, you won’t be able to understand what they want, but sadly they don’t understand either why you can’t serve them.

When it comes to a digital image, it’s harder to actually transmute it mentally in real physic dimensions. When talking about a classic picture, we can for instance say that is has 13 x 18 centimeters and everyone understands what we’re talking about. But in digital photography, saying an image is 20 x 30 centimeters makes no sense the same way as saying it has 300 dpi doesn’t make any sense.

The provenience of the word pixel comes from “pictures elements”, for short, Pixel, and these are considered to be the smallest divisions of a digital photography image. In real photos we use centimeters or millimeters because they are the smallest defined parts of a piece of paper, this means in computer photos we will use pixels. For example we say we have an image of 2000 x 1500 pixels. No ordinary computer user could tell just how big a pixel is, or if it has dimensions, therefore another concept named image resolution must be used.

The resolution in digital photography is actually a density measure, of how many pixels can be found in one inch or in one centimeter. So, when we talked before of dpi numbers, they actually represented the density of pixels. With all the variables available, real life dimension can be calculated, for example when we want to print a picture and we are not sure what paper format fits it best.

When digital photography was still young, the greatest problem producers faced was coming up with digital captors. This is why, the number of mega pixels that could be produced by a certain camera was considered important. This mega pixel number shows the amount of pixels a camera can process and transform at a certain moment and the higher it is, the better the camera sales.
